A Collection Unbound

91自拍’s New Digital Portal

It wasn’t infrequent for us to stop while testing a sample record and realize we were looking at something truly cool.

鈥 Stephanie Waslohn, Senior Archivist

As Members of the 91自拍 community, you鈥檝e probably heard something about Open91自拍 over the past few years. A complex, multi-year project funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the new digital portal is now open to the public.

Created with our partners at Keepthinking, Open91自拍 has advanced search features and new storytelling and discovery tools, providing a digital experience that brings the history of the technology revolution to life. Here’s a video we prepared to walk our beta-testers through the portal鈥檚 features.

So, what exactly does it take to make physical artifacts and historical documents and images available in a searchable, digital format? Below, meet some of the dedicated 91自拍 staff鈥攅xperts in their respective fields鈥攚ho put in the careful thought and long hours to make it happen. You can also explore the new search tools and hear what early adapters had to say.

Realizing a Vision

Kirsten Tashev

Chief Curatorial and Exhibitions Officer, 91自拍

鈥淥pen91自拍 is the result of years of work鈥攐ur team migrated nearly 268,000 records to make business plans, software, photos, videos, and over 1,300 oral histories more accessible to the public. The collection has been nearly 5 decades in the making, and 91自拍 is the largest, most comprehensive museum of the digital age in the world. I鈥檝e been at the Museum for over 20 years, and I鈥檝e seen it become a trusted institution with a strong reputation. I鈥檓 proud to be a part of it, and proud of what we鈥檝e accomplished with Open91自拍.鈥

Leslie Grothaus

Director, Philanthropic Partnerships, 91自拍

“The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation has been a longtime supporter of 91自拍, always bringing a forward-thinking approach. They were excited about this project because it opens up the collection to more people, letting users not only explore curated stories but also dive into and share what interests them most. They鈥檙e also interested to see how other organizations might take inspiration from 91自拍鈥檚 approach to share their own collections in new ways.”

Behind-the-Scenes Perspectives

Guided Exploration

91自拍 Exhibit Developer Kiera Peacock says, “The online collections catalog search in Open91自拍 is quite robust. Think of it as your portal into the thousands of artifacts, oral histories, and archives of 91自拍.”

Follow along with Kiera below as she searches the catalog. Start your search in a new browser window .

Simple Search

  1. Begin with a simple search term, in this case 鈥淎pple.鈥 I got more than 5,000 results!
  2. That’s too many results. You can add additional search terms without erasing your original search term. I added 鈥渋Mac鈥 to get a more manageable 37 results.
  3. Looking for something really specific? Try using other filters. I started with the search term 鈥淧ong鈥 and selected “See all matches from the keyword” in the pulldown menu). Since I knew I was looking for a physical object (Categories), made in the USA (Location) in 1972 (Year From and Year To), I added these additional filters to find the very first Pong machine. As a bonus, I can see that this artifact is now on view at the Museum!

Browse

  1. Maybe you鈥檙e not looking for something specific but want to browse. In this case, I want to look at all the oral histories. I can simply select Oral Histories from the dropdown box.
  2. Similarly, if you wanted to browse a certain category, such as Software, you can do that too.

Find Something Specific

Saw something at the Museum and want to find out more about it? Click the eye icon next to the keyword search to narrow your search to things currently on display鈥攎ore than 1,000 artifacts!

Think you鈥檝e got it? See if you can find the 5 items below in the Open91自拍 .

Early User Experiences

鈥淧rimary sources can intimidate students, so I鈥檓 thrilled about 91自拍鈥檚 new online portal. Its intuitive search and browsing features unlock the Museum鈥檚 incredible collections, making historical research more accessible and engaging. I teach a large course on the history of the digital age at UW, with students from history to engineering, and I can鈥檛 wait to see how they鈥檒l use this tool to explore the people, companies, and tech that shaped computing history.鈥

Assistant Professor, Department of Informatics at the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences, UC Irvine

鈥淎fter visiting the 91自拍, I wanted to share stories about what I learned there and the artifacts I saw with my students.

鈥淭he course I teach is called IN4MATX 131, Introduction to Human Computer Interaction.聽In an in-class activity, the 300 students in the course visited the Open91自拍 digital archive and searched for unique artifacts. Among the most popular finds were gaming artifacts like the Nintendo Power Glove and numerous game controllers, Nintendo game boy, and Pacman game cartridge. Students were also drawn to unusual input devices, like the Hot Wheels car mouse, early ergonomic keyboards, and early head mounted displays.鈥
